About
Jennifer Chua is a visual artist who recently received an MFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Ceramics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. While she works in a variety of materials, she primarily utilizes time and labor-intensive craft mediums, such as ceramics and fiber techniques, to meditate upon memory, loss, and longing through tiny, repetitive actions. The physical manifestations of these thought experiments often include ephemeral elements, such as shadow, sound, and natural decay, to engage and deepen the viewer's awareness of the present and fleeting moment, and the ease with which individual gestures can be swept away.
She holds a BA in English Literature from the University of Michigan and an Ed.M from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she concentrated in Arts in Education. During her time at the University of Hawaii, she has received the gallery/curatorial graduate assistantship as well as the Graduate Teaching Fellowship in ceramics. Her exhibition history includes her solo thesis show, "Always Petal by Petal," as well as a number of group exhibitions in New York, California, and Honolulu. She recently completed a term as a Student Director-At-Large for the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), and will be an Artist in Residence at Baltimore Clayworks beginning in fall of 2016.
